Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Mass Production Version to Launch on October 29th, Priced Around 800,000 Yuan
Xiaomi has confirmed that the mass production version of the SU7 Ultra will be unveiled at the launch event on October 29th, with a rumored price point around 800,000 yuan ($112,000). The performance-focused electric sedan is expected to be a strong competitor in the premium segment.
Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant best known for its smartphones and consumer electronics, is set to make waves in the automotive industry with the unveiling of the mass production version of its SU7 Ultra electric sedan on October 29th, 2022. The launch event, themed “New Starting Point,” will also feature the Xiaomi 15 smartphone series and MIUI OS 2.
While many are eagerly anticipating the Xiaomi 15 lineup, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on the SU7 Ultra. Back in July, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that the production model would share the same electric motor configuration as the prototype version. This means the SU7 Ultra will be powered by three electric motors - two V8s and one V6s - delivering a staggering combined output of 1,548 horsepower.
This immense power puts the SU7 Ultra in the league of hypercars and makes it potentially the fastest accelerating production car from a Chinese brand. In prototype form, the SU7 Ultra recorded a blistering 0-100 km/h time of just 1.97 seconds and generated up to 2,145 kg of downforce. With extensive use of carbon fiber components to reduce weight, estimates suggest the prototype could cost over one million yuan ($140,000).
However, for the mass production model, rumors point to a more “affordable” price tag of around 800,000 yuan ($112,000). This would position the SU7 Ultra against established premium performance sedans like the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which starts at 1,228,000 yuan ($172,000) in China. Given the Taycan Turbo S sold just 4,600 units in China last year, the SU7 Ultra could make a significant impact if it delivers comparable or better performance at a lower price point.
While 800,000 yuan is still a substantial sum, it’s a far cry from the multi-million dollar price tags of hypercars like the Rimac Nevera or Lotus Evija that the SU7 Ultra appears to match in terms of raw performance. This “affordable” hypercar proposition, combined with Xiaomi’s brand appeal and proven track record in delivering high-performance consumer tech, could make the SU7 Ultra a highly sought-after vehicle among China’s growing affluent class.
Of course, real-world performance and everyday usability remain to be seen. The SU7 Ultra’s 1,548 hp output is likely to be restricted in normal driving modes for safety and efficiency. Xiaomi may implement a special high-performance mode that requires additional driver confirmation to unleash the full potential. Ride comfort, handling, build quality and after-sales support will also be crucial factors in determining the SU7 Ultra’s success as a daily-drivable hypercar.
Xiaomi’s foray into the ultra-premium electric vehicle segment with the SU7 Ultra is a bold move that showcases the company’s ambition and confidence in its ability to compete with established players. With its disruptive pricing strategy and focus on cutting-edge technology, Xiaomi could shake up the premium EV market in China and beyond. The world will be closely watching on October 29th as Xiaomi provides more details on this electrifying new chapter in its history.
