Xiaomi SU7 ranks second in pure electric sedan sales in September

The Xiaomi SU7 achieved an impressive sales performance in September, securing the second spot in the rankings for pure electric sedans priced above 200,000 yuan. Despite being a new entrant from a young automaker, the SU7 is proving to be a formidable challenger to established players like Tesla.

In the highly competitive landscape of China’s electric vehicle market, a new star is rising - the Xiaomi SU7. September sales figures reveal that this sleek sedan from upstart automaker Xiaomi Auto clinched the number two position in the pure electric sedan segment for vehicles priced over 200,000 yuan ($28,000). This is a remarkable feat considering Xiaomi is a relative newcomer to the auto industry.

The Xiaomi SUd 13,559 units in September, its highest monthly sales to date. This puts it second only to the Tesla Model 3, which managed 23,000 deliveries. No other domestic EV sedan came close to these numbers in the premium segment.

Looking at a breakdown of the SU7’s September rankings:

  • 8th in overall sales for all vehicle types priced above 200,000 yuan
  • 6th among all new energy vehicles over 200,000 yuan
  • 3rd for pure electric vehicles over 200,000 yuan
  • 12th among all new energy sedans (regardless of price)
  • Top 20 for all sedans (of any powertrain type)

What makes the SU7’s performance even more impressive is the stark gap between Xiaomi and other domestic EV brands in the 200,000+ yuan pure electric sedan category. Rivals like the NIO ET5 and ZEEKR 001 only managed 5,000-7,000 unit sales.

Industry watchers attribute the SU7’s success to Xiaomi’s powerful brand recognition, marketing prowess, and loyal customer base stemming from its smartphone business. The company has been able to generate substantial buzz and demand despite being new to auto manufacturing.

Looking ahead, Xiaomi has set a target of delivering 20,000 SU7s in October. Given it reached over 13,000 in September despite supply constraints during the week-long National Day holiday, this goal seems achievable. If Xiaomi can scale up production capacity and sustain demand, the SU7 is poised to remain a top contender in the premium electric sedan space.

Some auto experts predict that with Xiaomi’s second factory coming online next year, the company’s overall EV sales could cross one million units by 2027. The Xiaomi SU7’s breakout success in its first year will likely be seen as a historic milestone and turning point for both Xiaomi and the Chinese EV industry as a whole.

While still trailing Tesla currently, Xiaomi has proven with the SU7 that it is a serious challenger and one to watch in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle race. The coming months will test whether it can live up to its lofty ambitions as traditional auto giants and other tech entrants crowd into the EV arena.
