The Complexities of Marriage on Call Me By Fire Season 4 Episode 2
Episode 2 of Call Me By Fire Season 4 offered a revealing look at the marital struggles of the celebrity couples, particularly Huang Shengyi and Yang Zi, Li Xingliang and Mai Ding, as well as Liu Dong and Ke Xi.
The second episode of the fourth season of the popular Chinese reality show Call Me By Fire provided an intimate glimpse into the complicated marriages of several celebrity couples. While the show is known for its fiery competitions and dramatic eliminations, this episode shifted focus to the personal lives and relationship dynamics of the contestants, especially three pairs: Huang Shengyi and Yang Zi, Li Xingliang and Mai Ding, and Liu Dong and Ke Xi.
Huang Shengyi and Yang Zi’s marriage has been a topic of public fascination for years. Despite persistent rumors of Yang Zi’s infidelity, the couple put on a united front for the cameras. However, telling moments revealed cracks in the facade. In one scene, Huang danced alone while the other guests clapped along awkwardly as Yang ate meat in the background. Later, Yang brought two bottles of a peach drink, ostensibly for his wife, only to consume them himself in front of castmate Liu Dong without sharing. These interactions suggest a marriage where thoughtful gestures and genuine care have been replaced by selfishness and neglect.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated between Li Xingliang and Mai Ding over a closet dispute. Mai felt squeezed out by Li’s clothes taking over the shared space and lashed out passive-aggressively. Li reacted by dramatically throwing out his own clothes. The childish tit-for-tat evoked an overbearing mother-son dynamic more than a healthy husband-wife relationship. Mai’s dissatisfaction seems to stem not from the single incident but an overall unhappiness with the marriage itself. However, neither is willing to directly confront the deeper issues.
Finally, Liu Dong and Ke Xi exposed a major conflict regarding money. Liu had spent funds given to Ke by her mother as a nest egg, dismissing it as “dowry.” Ke’s silence on the matter spoke volumes about her mounting disillusionment. A later attempt at rekindling their romance fell flat when Liu frantically begged Ke to ignite a symbolic sparkler representing passion for their marriage while she refused to budge. His desperate pleas hinted at an awareness of Ke’s fading love that he is ill-equipped to resurrect.
While the show mines their pain for entertainment, these very real marital issues reflect struggles faced by many couples: unmet emotional needs, broken communication, financial disputes, and diverging expectations. Whether airing dirty laundry on national TV will ultimately help or hurt these particular celebrity marriages remains to be seen. But for viewers, it serves as a poignant reminder of the difficult, unrelenting work required to sustain a partnership through the inevitable trials of life in the spotlight or outside it. As the old saying goes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence - even if that fence is lined with flashing cameras.
