New Year’s Eve Away from Home

Leaving my comfort zone for the first time, spending New Year’s Eve among strangers for the first time, navigating the currents of society for the first time, and feeling such a strong sense of nostalgia on New Year’s Eve for the first time.

Although New Year’s Eve is still a week away, I can already envision the scene.

I woke up naturally after 10 o’clock, no one to make plans with, so I ordered takeout for myself. I watched New Year’s Eve shows on various TV channels while eating lukewarm dumplings. I scrolled through various inspirational messages filled with vitality, witnessing the sweet interactions between couples, spouses, and families.

Let’s go out, the desolate dormitory area seemed to mock me, saying, “No one invites you when you don’t work, so you might as well stay in and guard the dormitory for the dormitory manager!”

People scattered on the streets: a girl leaning on her boyfriend’s shoulder, a tipsy young man being dragged home by a friend, a teenager singing and dancing spontaneously on the street, and an internet celebrity livestreaming all night by the roadside. People of all kinds chatted with their friends about the joys and sorrows of the past year, discussing their paths to prosperity.

It’s as if the world on this day won’t be overwhelmed by busy work or crushed by cruel pressure. Everyone is seizing the opportunity in this auspicious Year of the Dragon, refreshing their spirits, brushing off the dust of the past year, and crossing over into the hopeful new year.

For those far from home, holding their phones to connect with their families but unable to touch each other, a forced smile hides their helplessness and reluctance. But how can society allow you to leave like this after delivering its blows? It will surely scatter your comfort to the wind.

Let’s get back to the point. It seems like I’ve been talking around the point. New Year’s Eve, just another ordinary day, let’s treat it like any other day. After all, it’s just a day with a beautiful name. There are no earthquakes, no tsunamis, just a fancy title. However, this year, I can’t interpret it with my own experiences…

Planning to spend time together with my partner, we’re thinking of buying matching sweaters and watching a movie. Twinkle, twinkle, little stars!

We didn’t manage to get tickets for the snow resort, but we have tickets for another venue. I got tickets for the 13:14 exclusive confession session. Forget about expecting snow in Shenzhen, anyway, we’ll first go to Daqianli to have hotpot at Hai Di Lao, then watch a movie, and finally go on our date, haha. Both of us don’t like staying up late, so we go to bed after midnight. Haha, it’s mainly because of me; ever since we started dating, he stopped staying up late.

No matter which city you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve in, you’ll have to walk back home. There aren’t even any shared bicycles available. Don’t talk about new beginnings; this is just a form of self-consolation in our subconscious. The most meaningful thing to do on New Year’s Eve is to pray or make wishes, not to hope to bump into handsome guys or beautiful girls!!!

On New Year’s Eve, after a city walk with friends in Beijing, we witnessed the first sunrise and flag-raising ceremony of 2024 together!

Today, I’m complaining about the New Year’s Eve, leaving all the unhappiness behind in 2023.

In 2024, I’ll be a brand-new me, being a confident self.

Night Shift Tonight

Live each day just like any other day!! Even though there’s a party going on in the square next door since the night before, I’m not interested. Someone invited me to celebrate New Year’s Eve together, but I’m not interested! Staying at home, watching TV shows and playing games in the most comfortable position is the most enjoyable!

We, as psychotherapists, plan our schedules based on the days of the week. Due to the unique nature of psychotherapy, there are fixed visiting hours for each day of the week. If a holiday happens to fall on a day when there are no counseling sessions scheduled for that week, we can indeed celebrate the holiday. However, if it falls on a regular working day, we will be consistently waiting for visitors in the counseling room.

So, this New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday, which is one of my working days, meaning I will be working on this special case for New Year’s.

Tomorrow is the exam, and I will pass.

A Special New Year’s Eve with My Beloved

Spending an intimate New Year’s Eve with the love of my life, who happens to be my husband of over a decade, despite our frequent separations due to his frontline commitments. As a wife, I am determined to support his work. This is the third New Year’s Eve we can celebrate together since we got married, and I intend to make it memorable. Here are the specific plans:

1. Cleaning the Room Thoroughly: Our room needs to be spotless as he is quite meticulous. All the plants need to be pruned, watered, and basked in the latest sunlight. Windows must be wide open for ventilation, and a floor-sweeping robot will be used to ease my workload. Especially the bathroom and kitchen areas must be free of clutter and trash.

2. Preparing a Hotpot Feast: I’ll prepare a hotpot with two broths - one mild for him and a spicy one for me. Ingredients, including ribs, prawns, vegetables like spinach, cabbage, mushrooms, and homemade meatballs, must be fresh and abundant.

3. Buying Movie Tickets in Advance: He enjoys watching artistic films, showing the sensitive side of this STEM guy known as the “Iron Man” at work for his strictness, clear logic, and calm mind. In our personal life, he is loving and affectionate. Being his wife, I truly feel like I’ve saved the galaxy in a past life.

4. Placing Aromatherapy on the Bathroom Windowsill: I’ll create an elegant atmosphere in the bathroom with his favorite aroma - lavender. If the daytime space is filled with various elements, I can take charge of the evening ambiance and cater to his preferences. Who can blame me for loving him so deeply? He enjoys subtle scents, just like the lavender fragrance that reminds me of the spring when he confessed his love under the sunlight.

5. Luxurious Four-Piece Bedding Set and Cotton Blanket: In this lifetime of hardships, we have the privilege of experiencing happiness. Comfortable bedsheets that touch our skin softly, connecting us with nature in a gentle way. Isn’t this a rare kind of beauty?

In the quiet of the night, as I watch him peacefully sleep, I feel truly blessed as his wife.
