Can fish naturally appear in a newly dug pond on a mountain?

It may seem improbable for fish to magically appear in a newly dug pond high up on a mountain, far from other water sources. However, nature has remarkable ways of introducing aquatic life to new habitats, even without human intervention.

One of the primary ways fish can populate a new pond is through birds. Many waterbirds can carry fish eggs that stick to their feathers, feet, or even within their digestive tracts. When these birds visit the new pond, they can inadvertently introduce the eggs, which then hatch and establish a new fish population. Birds like herons and kingfishers may also drop live fish into the pond.

If underground rivers or streams connect the new pond to other bodies of water that harbor fish, these subterranean passages can allow fish to swim into their new mountain home. Seasonal flooding from nearby lakes or rivers can also overflow into the pond, carrying fish with the influx of water.

Astonishingly, some fish eggs can remain dormant in the soil, waiting for the right conditions to hatch. If a pond is dug in an area that was once a lake or pond, these eggs can spring to life once submerged in water again. Species like lungfish and killifish lay their eggs in mud during the rainy season. The eggs can survive through the dry season until rains fill the pond again, trigg to hatch.

In extreme cases, fish may even be sucked up by waterspouts from nearby lakes and dropped into the new pond. Life has awe-inspiring ways of finding a foothold in new environments.
